I get about 500 pieces of spam per week, and that’s a real bother. I like to do anything I can to make life kore difficult for the spammers. This plugin does that by putting randomly generated email addresses on the web site. I label them clearly as not being real. This means that they cause no problem unless somebody is running a program to harvest email addresses from web sites. In that case they will harvest many fake addresses from my site. This decreases the value of their ill-gotten lists.
There is already a plugin called NP_FakeMail that generates random email addresses for the spammers robots to harvest, but unfortunately it generates random host names, and it is very easy to check the validity of those names and reject them. I imagine that most spammers are doing that already.
I started with that code and changed it so that I could enter the host names of the web sites being promoted by the spam. The effect will be that the spammers will be sending spam to each other. I feel good about that.
